Some homes deserve more than a renovation - they deserve a thoughtful reinvention; defined not only by their architecture, but by the memories they hold. This landmark family residence in Plettenberg Bay was thoughtfully reimagined into a contemporary coastal sanctuary, preserving its legacy while creating a timeless home for future generations.

Reimagining a Family Legacy

Rather than simply modernising an ageing property, the brief was to create a timeless coastal home that honoured the family’s legacy while embracing contemporary living. Every intervention sought to strengthen the relationship between architecture, landscape and the magnificent Indian Ocean beyond.

Working from Cape Town over approximately fourteen months, every aspect of the project was carefully coordinated to deliver a cohesive and enduring design solution. Existing spaces were reconfigured to improve circulation, introduce greater natural light and create a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding coastal setting. Materiality became central to the home’s new identity. Warm timber finishes, natural stone, large-format porcelain surfaces and integrated architectural lighting replaced dated finishes, creating an atmosphere of understated elegance that complements the landscape rather than competing with it.

A significant component of the transformation involved unlocking previously underutilised external spaces. A substantial multi-level timber entertainment deck was designed to integrate naturally with the site’s topography, extending the living spaces outdoors while creating a series of carefully considered areas that maximise panoramic views across the Indian Ocean.

The refurbishment also introduced a collection of bespoke lifestyle spaces, including a private cinema, entertainment lounge, wellness-inspired bathrooms and refined guest accommodation. Every room was designed to balance comfort with sophistication while maintaining a consistent architectural language throughout the residence.

More than a comprehensive refurbishment, this project represents the careful stewardship of a family legacy. Every design decision was guided by a commitment to preserve the spiri of the home while creating a contemporary coastal residence designed to be enjoyed for generations to come.
